How to create a custom ValidationAttribute in MVC 3?

Status: Resolved.

I am creating a custom attribute to compare StartDate and EndDate on a model and make sure that EndDate is not earlier than StartDate.

Step 1.
Add a class to the project in Validation folder named GraterThanDateAttribute, that is inherited from ValidationAttribute.
using System; using System.ComponentModel.DataAnnotations; namespace SoftwareTalk.Validation { [AttributeUsage(AttributeTargets.Class | AttributeTargets.Field | AttributeTargets.Property, Inherited = false, AllowMultiple = false)] public class GraterThanDateAttribute : ValidationAttribute { public string _OtherPropertyName { get; set; } public GraterThanDateAttribute(string OtherPropertyName): base("{0} must be grater than {1}") { _OtherPropertyName = OtherPropertyName; } public override string FormatErrorMessage(string name) { return string.Format(ErrorMessageString, name, _OtherPropertyName); } protected override ValidationResult IsValid(object value, ValidationContext validationContext) { var OtherPropertInfo = validationContext.ObjectType.GetProperty(_OtherPropertyName); var OtherDate = (DateTime)OtherPropertInfo.GetValue(validationContext.ObjectInstance, null); var thisDate = (DateTime)value; if (thisDate <= OtherDate) { var errorMessage = FormatErrorMessage(validationContext.DisplayName); return new ValidationResult(errorMessage); } return ValidationResult.Success; ; } } }

Step 2.
create a model(class) named TimeCard in the model folder(or any sub filder, I created a folder called "TimeSheet" under Model folder).

Step 3.

Add a reference to validation name space(SoftwareTalk.Validation) to the Model class

Step 4.
Add the Properties to the model class.
using System; using System.ComponentModel.DataAnnotations; using SoftwareTalk.Validation; namespace SoftwareTalk.Models.TimeSheet { public class TimeCard { public int TimeCardId { get; set; } [Required] [StringLength(25)] public string UserName { get; set; } [Range(1,120)] public int HoursWorked { get; set; } public DateTime StartDate { get; set;} [GraterThanDate("StartDate")] public DateTime EndDate { get; set; } public TimeCard() { StartDate = DateTime.Now.AddDays(-7); EndDate = DateTime.Now; } } }

Now we are ready to use the model "TimeCard" any where in the MVC application.
